6 Ways To Get Going With Your Latest Masterpiece.
It’s 3 am. The house is quiet, apart from snoring and the occasional person or dog scratching and farting. It is dark, cosy and comfortable.
And I am awake. Wide awake.
I am chugging back hot chocolate (Vegan Galaxy Hot Chocolate is superb) and having given up on the idea of sleep, I’m downstairs at my desk, wondering what to write about?
Some ideas to get my brain going.
Luckily, I am subscribed to a gazillion different newsletters, and the good ones generally inspire their readers to think by writing stuff like:
Lists.
Like this one. Lists are dead easy. Think of something, anything, and write a list about it.- 10 Best Dog Names?
- 6 Ways To Cook A Potato?
- 7 Must-See Sights To See In Bognor Regis?
- 5 Best Crochet Hooks For Making Lace?
- 42 Reasons Your Ex Is A Twat?
See? The possibilities are endless. As a bonus tip, add a number into your headline. Some believe it enhances the opportunity for people to read your article.
Opinion Pieces.
Have a quick look in a newspaper. Or even the dreaded MSN. See what pisses you off most, and then write about why. Or go through Substack, see what delights you most and write a glowing review of the piece.
- Couldn’t care less about Jermaine Jenas being sacked from the BBC? Or maybe you could … why?
- Fancy yourself as an expert on the intricacies of the horrid wars that keep going on? Put the world to rights, you never know, perhaps someone will read your article and world peace will happen.- Think Trump is a bell end, or Biden is an extra from The Walking Dead? Or Boris Johnson can get in the bin? Slap some words out about it.
Local News.
Is something going on in your area that bothers or excites you? Spill the beans. For added clout, you can then share from your Substack to your local area social media pages, where everyone can read your article, and have a massive Facebook argument with each other for your amusement.Fiction.
Maybe you have an idea in your head but no idea where you want to go with it. Jot it down.
- Create a character. They do not need to have a story straight away.
- Do some world building and add people and places to an imaginary world in your head.
I write as Rose Blush, to get my head into her space, in her world, just as a hobby. The stories may well write themselves as you go along.
Remember, fiction doesn’t have to be written in any order. Create any part of it for use at the right moment.Your Speciality.
I’m a dog behaviourist, so I write about dog stuff. Maybe you are an expert in stained glass windows, or make music, or can bake amazing cakes, or are a fantastic gardener. We all have things that interest us and we are good at. Share your knowledge.Share A Memory.
We humans are nosey bastards and love reading about the lives of others. Tell us a funny story from your childhood, or what your partner gets up to at work, or about the noisy neighbours, or how your dog keeps humping the fridge. Tell us your triumphs, and your lows, and how you became who you are.
Don’t forget to add in any links and subscribe buttons, edit if you want to (I do it as I go along, for the most part) and bingo, you have something written to share.
Today’s Sub Stats
I changed my Substack to a new profile a few days ago and the usual stats I show are not showing data yet. However, I have gained two more subscribers, and am super grateful to have all of you along!
